Hi, I’m back! I’ve been buckled down over the last six months, catching up on a backlog of custom orders. I suppose it’s a good problem to have — getting more orders than I can manage — but as my wait list grew longer, I grew more and more frustrated, especially as the 6-7 month turnaround time started to turn buyers away. I completely understood; who wants to plan a Christmas gift in April, or wait seven months for a family portrait? (Bless the patient clients who were willing.) As the turnaround time tipped towards eight months over the holidays, I decided to close down custom orders and address the issue. Now I’m back — with some exciting changes.
First, let me know note that JGO is a one-woman operation. I coordinate with each buyer, illustrate each portrait, and hand-craft every paper doll. The old pricing structure just didn’t reflect the level of hands-on care and attention to detail I strive to put into each portrait. I strongly believe in the importance of getting paid for the full value of your work. At the same time, I never felt comfortable raising prices while asking buyers to continue waiting longer and longer turnaround times for their orders.
Which brings us to the relaunch: turnaround time for custom orders is now 8-10 weeks, and I hope to offer a rush option soon. A set of three paper dolls used to cost $105; now that’s the price for a set of two. Dogs and cats can now be added separately at a lower cost. Shipping prices for framed paper doll portraits have been lowered, too — especially for buyers outside the US. Thanks so much for your support and loyalty. With each new order I’m humbled, and there’s nothing quite as fulfilling as a delighted response to a project. Hopefully the new custom order structure will make that more sustainable for the future.
